A comparative acoustic study of Australian English fricated /t/: assessing the Irish (English) link

چکیده

This paper compares the acoustic characteristics of fricated realisations of /t/ in Australian English with /s/ and /S/. Australian English fricated /t/, like Irish English slit-/t/, shows similarities with /S/ rather than with /s/, whereas Middlesbrough English fricated /t/ is closer to /s/ (Jones and Llamas 2003). These findings raise the possibility that, rather than arising as an independent development from widely occurring casual speech processes, Australian English fricated /t/ could have its origins in the Irish English speech of many immigrants to Australia in the 1800s.

The acoustic character of fricated /t/ in Australian English: A comparison with /s/ and //

Australian English /t/ has a fricative realisation in some contexts. The presence of an additional surface fricative in the language raises questions about potential merger and the maintenance of contrasts. An orthographic representation of fricated /t/ as 〈sh〉 suggests a similarity to the existing fricative /S/. This paper compares the acoustic characteristics of fricated realisations of /t/ i...

Evidence of a near-merger in western sydney australian English vowels

Research on various dialects of English has demonstrated the existence of so-called near-mergers. The present study examines the identification and discrimination of the vowels of Western Sydney Australian English, for which no such mergers have been previously documented. We find evidence for perceptual confusion of / /-/ / (in /hVb /), despite significant acoustic differences in productions o...

Acoustic Analysis of Persian EFL Learners' Pronunciation of English Vowels

This paper reports the results of an experimental study on non-native production of English vowels. Two groups of Persian EFL learners varying in language proficiency were tested on their ability to produce the nine plain vowels of American English. Vowel production accuracy was assessed by means of acoustic measurements. Ladefoged and Maddison’s (1996) F1 F2 measurements for American English v...

Analysis, modelling and synthesis of formants of British, American and Australian accents

The formant space of three major English accents namely British, American and Australian are modelled and used for accent conversion. Accent synthesis, through modification of the acoustic parameters of speech, provides a means for assessing the perceptual contribution of each parameter on conveying an accent. An improved method based on a linear prediction (LP) model feature analysis and a 2-D...
